Complete Online Ruler Guide

Last updated: 14 August 2026

Online Free Ruler turns your screen into a flexible measuring tool. Use this guide to set it up, measure objects in centimeters, millimeters, or inches, and get the most reliable result from your display.

1. Calibrate Your Screen First

Before measuring anything physical, open Calibrate and match a standard card, choose a supported device, or enter your screen diagonal. Matching a known-size card on the display you are actually using is usually the most dependable option. See the Calibration Guide for detailed instructions.

2. Choose the Right Unit

Use centimeters for most everyday metric measurements, millimeters for small details, and inches for imperial measurements. The ruler can also show pixels for design and screen-layout work; pixels are not a physical unit unless the screen has been calibrated. You can switch units from the toolbar or use the unit shortcuts shown in the app.

3. Place the Ruler

Choose a top, bottom, left, or right edge from the placement controls. Use one edge for a quick measurement, two edges to create a corner reference, or all four edges for a complete measuring frame. Full-screen mode can give you more room while keeping the scale visible.

4. Measure an Object

Place the object flat against the screen and align one end with the zero mark. Read the mark at the other end, keeping your eyes directly above the scale to reduce parallax. For an object that does not fit along an edge, use the measurement tool: drag from one point to another to see the live distance and angle.

5. Use Guides and the Crosshair

Guides create reference lines for repeated alignment, spacing checks, or comparing several objects. The crosshair reports live coordinates in your selected unit. These tools are especially useful for design, image review, crafts, and positioning work. Clear guides and measurements when you are ready to start again.

6. Get Consistent Results

Keep browser zoom at 100%, avoid changing display scaling after calibration, and recalibrate after changing screens, browsers, or devices. Keep the item flat to the screen and use a physical ruler to verify any measurement where precision matters. The Accuracy Guide explains important limits and suitable use cases.

Common Uses

Use the ruler to check paper and photo sizes, craft materials, small household objects, layouts, screen spacing, and images. It is intended for convenient everyday measurements, not as a replacement for certified equipment in medical, safety, legal, engineering, manufacturing, or other critical work.
